Community Update on UESF Strike (2/9/26)

We want to share an update about United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) and the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD).

What’s Happening

  • UESF is striking, starting Monday February 9th.
  • The strike is the result of ongoing contract negotiations between UESF and SFUSD. The union and the district have not yet reached agreement on several issues, including salary increases, healthcare coverage, and sanctuary protections for immigrant students.
  • Schools and SFUSD central office are closed to the public.
  • It’s unclear how long the strike will last or how school time will be made up.

Community Resources for Students and Families (FULL LIST HERE)
Note: this list focuses on resources near the Chinatown and North Beach neighborhoods, with some citywide programs. For additional info, check SFUSD’s Information & Resources.

1) Daytime spaces open to students:

  • Childcare through SF Department of Early Childhood
    • Children’s Council and Wu Yee will work with DEC to reach out to family childcare providers with open spots
    • Open to families with children under 5 affected by the SFUSD strike 
    • Contact Children’s Council and Wu Yee by phone or through their websites; fill out short enrollment form to be matched with a provider

  • San Francisco Public Library – North Beach

    • Open to the public at 10:00 am daily
    • Monday Morning Play: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for children ages 5 and under.
    • LEGO Free Play: From 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., for children ages 12 and under.
    • Children under the age of 8 must be supervised.

  • San Francisco Public Library – Chinatown
    • 1135 Powell St
    • Open to the public M-Th 10:00 am, F 1:00 pm
    • Storytime for Preschoolers: every Wednesday 11:00 am 
    • Storytime for Babies: every Thursday 11:00 am

  • City College of SF – North Beach Center Library
    • 808 Kearny Street, 2nd Floor
    • Open to the public M-Th 9:00 am – 3:00pm
    • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • YMCA of Greater San Francisco
    • Citywide locations, with possible programming during the strike
    • Search for a location and programming near you
  • San Francisco Recreation and Parks
    • San Francisco Recreation and Parks sites with afterschool programs will operate as full day programs for youth that are already currently enrolled.
    • If your child is enrolled, contact your program manager for details.
