With the results of the national election this week, many Americans are forced to confront a difficult truth about who we are as a country, the devastating power of fear and bigotry, and the enduring legacy of exclusion and oppression.
As we face this difficult moment together, CAA is committed more than ever to defending our rights and to safeguarding our democracy. We will fight for one another as we always have.
Donald Trump has vowed to bring back extreme and harmful policies that have scapegoated whole communities, dehumanized and attacked immigrants, gutted civil rights protections, and stoked fear in and hate against our communities. We are doubling down in our commitment to resist.
In San Francisco, we expect to prevail on each of the ten ballot measure positions we took. This included passing funds for schools, housing, and hospitals; defeating wasteful police boondoggles and other efforts that eroded civic participation; and advancing measures to protect reproductive rights, establish an inspector general, reduce taxes for small businesses, and responsibly reform our commissions. We also look forward to working with Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie, and are monitoring closely the results of key Supervisor races that are not final.
On the California ballot, we had disappointing results. Though marriage equality passed, many critical measures did not. Along with allies, we know that long-term, meaningful change will require persistence, courage, and sustained action.
All of this work follows efforts this year that have included non-partisan candidate forums, voter workshops, in-language voting guides, and online fact-checking to combat disinformation. We dedicated special attention to ensure that limited English speaking voters could arrive at the polls informed, empowered, and engaged.
The challenges ahead will undoubtedly demand more from all of us. Our work has never started or ended with Election Day, and the long arc of history may bend towards justice, but it does not bend itself.
Thank you for your support and standing with us in our ongoing fight against hate, to protect immigrant communities, and to defend democracy.
In solidarity,
Chinese for Affirmative Action
