September Newsletter: Celebrating Vietnamese, ethnic studies, & don’t forget to VOTE!

Between challenges to ethnic studies and a battle over tech’s influence in District 10, now is a crucial time to raise our voices, and ask for the San Francisco we deserve! In this newsletter, we have ways for you to get informed, and get involved locally:

  • Sign an open letter showcasing Asian American support for ethnic studies
  • Read CAA’s voter guide in English, Chinese, and Spanish
  • Ask the D10 candidates about safety, surveillance, and more on 9/30
  • Celebrate a win for language access! San Francisco officially rolls out Vietnamese language services

Stand strong with ethnic studies!

Earlier this summer, SFUSD was sued over its adoption of an ethnic studies textbook. Make no mistake about it — this was part of a large-scale attack on race consciousness in schools, which includes Republicans grilling Superintendent Maria Su at a Congressional hearing.

This kind of escalation was not met quietly. CAA rallied Asian American allies to sign a petition of support for ethnic studies, including the original protestors from the Third World Liberation Front. As anti-DEI forces take over our workplaces, we cannot let them misrepresent American history in our classrooms! Read the letter and add your name here.

Vote for working-class families, livability this November

November’s elections are almost here, as working-class immigrant families are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet in San Francisco. CAA’s voter guide highlights our recommendations for supporting working class families who are the backbone of our city. The guide is available in English, Chinese, and Spanish. Can you share this voter guide with your family and friends?

🗳️ Did you miss our Board of Education candidate forum? Mission Local was there to cover what the candidates had to say about protecting ethnic studies at San Francisco Unified School District. Thank you to all the candidates who joined us to discuss key issues impacting our students and their families.

In an exciting, youth-led forum, meet the District 10 candidates on September 30 at the Southeast Community Center! Between issues of surveillance technology and potential data centers, District 10 is at the center of a growing debate over the soul of San Francisco.

Raise Your Voice for Better Buses!

While some may be able to decide between calling a cab, walking over a mile, or biking, many people in San Francisco (namely, working-class families, immigrant communities, our elderly and disabled neighbors) have only one choice: public transit. That’s why, in a first of its kind study, CAA led an audit of Chinese immigrant community members to develop policy recommendations for improving our public transit system! Read the report and learn how to get involved.

Celebrating Vietnamese Language

Finally, some good news in these gloomy times: San Francisco’s City departments began to officially roll out Vietnamese-language services after CAA and the Language Access Network (LAN) successfully fought for a 2024 amendment adding Vietnamese to the City’s Language Access Ordinance along with Chinese, Filipino, and Spanish. To celebrate this win, the City hosted a community block party for Welcoming Week 2026 in Little Saigon with the Vietnamese community! We had a great time celebrating with karaoke, food, and games in the heart of Little Saigon.
