Position Overview
The Research Manager is responsible for managing Stop AAPI Hate’s research projects on anti-Asian American and anti-Pacific Islander racism and ways to address it. The role manages each research project from scoping to release and plays an active role in the research process including research design, data collection, data analysis, and producing public-facing deliverables. The Research Manager establishes and manages research partnerships and supports the Coalition’s policy, advocacy, community care, and communications teams to leverage data and research to advance the Coalition’s goals.
The ideal candidate has a strong social science research background, successful project management experience, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and is excited to work with a number of internal and external stakeholders.
The Research Manager role is an exempt position and fully remote with the option to work hybrid at CAA’s San Francisco office if desired. Though subject to change, Stop AAPI Hate team members are expected to participate in periodic staff gatherings, primarily in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Key Responsibilities
Research Project Management
- Manage research collaborators, timeline, and workplan for Coalition research projects
- Oversee each individual research report’s process from scoping until release
- Identify, build and manage strong relationships with academics, research organizations, potential funders and community partners through conducting stakeholder analysis, maintaining regular communication
- Develop engagement plans with stakeholders that include strategic communication with stakeholders and representing the organization for collaboration opportunities
- Oversee the management of program contracts and ensure compliance with funding and reporting requirements
- Develop and manage budgets, negotiate funding and scope of work with specific contractors, monitor and report on progress and expenditures and ensure timely payments
- Contribute to Data & Research fundraising and development activities such as supporting grant proposals and identifying funding opportunities
- Manage vendors and contractors ensuring they meet project requirements and contractual compliance
- Supervise research interns and fellows
- Assist in preparing and monitoring team budgets to ensure alignment with program and organizational goals
Research, Writing, and Dissemination
- Play an active role in research, including study design, data collection, data analysis, and/or producing public-facing deliverables to communicate research findings
- Collaborate with other SAH teams to identify and coordinate new ways to disseminate research, such as report briefs, infographics, webinars, and convenings
Research Support
- Support SAH’s teams in leveraging data and research findings in their work and collaborate with team members to further the coalition’s vision and mission
- Support analysis and sharing of the Coalition’s reporting center data
- Conduct literature reviews to inform evidence-based approaches to finding solutions for anti-AA/PI hate
- Provide technical research assistance to SAH teams, including assisting with research design, data analysis, and interpretation of findings
Organizational Leadership
- Lead cross-functional teams, manage specific internal projects and serve on committees that influence the organization’s internal operations and culture
- Actively contribute to organizational strategic initiative and/or governance through participating in strategic planning, environmental assessments, analysis and provision of recommendation leveraging experience and expertise
Other Duties
- Contribute to other fundraising and development activities for the organization as needed
- Perform administrative duties as required for position
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the organization

Qualifications
- Strong commitment to the mission and values of Stop AAPI Hate and Chinese for Affirmative Action, including a commitment to social justice, equity, and civic engagement
- 3-5 years of professional experience with quantitative and qualitative social science research techniques and research report writing
- Graduate degree in social science, ethnic studies, public policy, public health, or related field, or equivalent combination of work experience and education
- Demonstrated ability to design research, collect data, analyze data, write up findings, and publish results
- Demonstrated experience with project management, including building partnerships, creating project timelines, communicating with internal and external partners, monitoring progress, and ensuring high quality products and timely completion
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate data and research to non-technical audiences
- Experience with data and research tools such as R, Tableau, Excel, and Dedoose (preferred)
- Flexible, self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial
- Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with teammates and a diverse set of stakeholders and collaborators
- Experience working with Pacific Islander and/or South Asian communities (a plus)
