Chinese for Affirmative Action is proud to be a leader in the Opportunity for All Coalition to repeal California’s Proposition 209, and to stand with Assemblymember Dr. Weber to introduce ACA-5.
Today, CAA joins a broad statewide coalition that recognizes that every Californian deserves a fair shot at success, including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The coalition has come together to repeal Prop 209, which has limited equal opportunity in California for more than 20 years.
California’s diverse AAPI communities stand to benefit tremendously from repealing Prop 209. Making affirmative action legal again in California means better wages, better jobs, and better access to high-quality education for all of us.
California is behind the nation, as one of only eight states that ban affirmative action. The bill ACA 5 will reinstate equal opportunity in public contracting, hiring, and public education.
Repealing Proposition 209 would unlock billions of dollars in economic opportunities for AAPI small business owners. In cities where affirmative action is legal, like Chicago or Atlanta, AAPI-owned businesses earn much more in public contracts than in San Francisco or Los Angeles, where equal opportunity is banned because of Prop 209. Asian Americans in other parts of the country get a big boost from affirmative action. That’s something that AAPI communities in California are missing out on.
States that consider race in college education have seen an increase in the number of AAPI students. Meanwhile, the rate of admission of AAPI students into UCLA and UC Berkeley has declined since 1996 after Prop 209 took effect. Until we Repeal Prop 209, AAPI students are at a disadvantage.
