The California Local Voting Coalition issued the following statement in response to the recent Superior Court ruling on Santa Ana’s noncitizen voting ballot language:
“Despite the Court’s misguided ruling, Santa Ana voters can still cast their ballots to expand the right to vote to all residents in the general election this November. The court’s ruling changes a few words in the ballot measure, but no court ruling can change the fact that immigrants have always been parents and taxpayers. It is time to end the political exclusion of immigrants and expand voting rights in local elections across California. Legal technicalities can’t stop this movement.”
The coalition brings together eight organizations from across California: Amigos de Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment; Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA); GO Public Schools Oakland; Harbor Institute for Immigrant and Economic Justice; National Immigration Project; Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN); Uniting Parents of Pasadena (UPP); and VietRISE.
