CAA staff and community cook tong yung and soup together during our winter solstice community event.

This past Sunday afternoon, CAA staff welcomed in the winter season with 70 of our friends and family in the Chinese immigrant community.

Taking place in the community space of the Chinatown YMCA, we cooked Tong Yun (Cantonese) or Tang Yuan (Mandarin), a sweet or savory treat usually prepared and eaten during the Winter Solstice. In addition, we prepared an impressive pot of soup, enough for all of the attendees, containing a wide variety of ingredients including chicken, Chinese sausage, daikon, ginger, green onion, fish, mushrooms, pork, and shrimp.

We want to thank our Outreach Specialists for helping bring community members out to the event. After lunch, we recapped their highlights from the year which include their advocacy work for Non-Citizen voting, organizing the Board of Education Townhall and testifying for Language Access.

We ended the festivities with the only way we know how to – a rocking karaoke session with Chinese language jams.
